Borge Mogensen Spanish chair designed in 1958 and produced by Fredericia Furniture - Model 2226
Arguably the most iconic Midcentury Danish design armchair, the Spanish chair was designed by Borge Mogensen was after a trip to Spain where he observed a traditional chair with wide arms which he strived to improve and re-design in his own design language.
The chair features a strong, brutalist design - quite the contrast to many designs of the same era, often favouring a sleek and slender frame. The Spanish chair features full solid oak construction, with a raw, soaped finish that has aged beautifully to show a rich, golden patina.
A timeless classic which has been constructed with unique saddle leather from Tärnsjö Garveri in Sweden, renowned for their traditional method of tanning hides. The leather is completely original and shows wonderful wear and patina throughout. The leather has been treated with our
Gold Quality Leather Grease, which really helps to nourish and maintain the leather by providing all the necessary nutrients from all the natural plant oils and bees wax within the grease.
The seat is secured to the frame with leather straps, adorned with brass hardware that further emphasises the hardy and solid stance of the armchair.
This particular example was bought new from Fredericia in 1978 by the previous owner and has been loved and enjoyed ever since. Being an early edition of the chair, this example features a pair of cross-supports between the rear legs - this was later changed in the newer chairs to be a single support.
